Vijay Eswaran: Business Insight

Vijay Eswaran is the founder of QI Group. He has built a diverse portfolio of companies that span many industries, including financial services, telecommunications, health care and pharmaceuticals. His business insight has led him to success in business as well as philanthropy.

Son of a school principal, Vijay Eswaran was born into modest circumstances in Malaysia. He did his schooling at The Royal Military College in Sungai Petani, Malaysia and later went on to study management science at the Southern Illinois University. After earning his degree, he got married to his wife Prema who is also an active philanthropist.

Eswaran began his career life as a market research manager for Hewlett-Packard Company. He later worked as sales director at TCS Bhd, where he picked up the knack of salesmanship and negotiation which would stand him in good stead later on in his career. After that Eswaran started Multi-Link India with the aim of bringing telephone services to all rural villages in India, but by 1993 it was clear that landlines were not going to be profitable. This led him on a quest for new opportunities.

In 1994, a trip to Hong Kong changed his life. While there he met John Park from whom he purchased a product called “Omega”. Eswaran then began exploring ways in which the product could be marketed and distributed. In 1995 Eswaran organized a company called Ensogo SA, with the purpose of bringing Omega to other countries. Ensogo was later written as QI Group Limited.

Today, Vijay Eswaran is the Executive Chairman of QI group and has built it into a business empire with diverse portfolios in various industries such as financial services, telecommunications, health care and pharmaceuticals. He is also involved in philanthropy through the Vijayaratnam Foundation Trust and Arul Kanda Foundation.
